Jackson Wildlife Trapper Tip of the Month:
Legal Ways to Kill Iguanas
The population of iguana has exploded over the past years especially in South Florida. This has resulted to the frustration of different homeowners. They are highly invasive creatures that are known for defecating on our pool, damaging the seawalls, and destroying the landscape. When you are killing an iguana, be sure that you will only choose the humane method. You should never cause them unnecessary pain.
How to kill Iguanas Legally
When killing iguanas, understand that there are wrong ways to conduct the lethal method. This can be as easy as hiring a professional. Nonetheless, you can also perform the lethal method on your own. When killing them on a legal manner, you need to end the life of the iguana instantly and without the necessary suffering. Some people will hit them on the head with a strong object. This can possibly be humane if you can deal a critical blow on their head.
Possible Repercussion
If you can’t kill the animal in a single hit, you can be charged under the law. This can be counted as animal cruelty which is considered a first-degree misdemeanor. This can also be punished with at least 1-year imprisonment coupled with a fine of 5,000. If you want to avoid this, you need to make sure that you will inflict the creature with the least amount of pain.
Freezing them to Death: Is it Humane?
In the past, freezing has been allowed. However, after the experts find out that freezing causes the creature with intense suffering, this method is no longer permitted. Once the brain of the animal goes through crystallization, the animal will experience an intense amount of pain.
How about Pellet Gun or Firearm?
Pellet guns can end their life humanely especially if you shoot them at the back of their head. However, this may not be possible if you live in the densely populated city. On the other hand, there should be an issue in using firearm. First, you need to use a low-caliber firearm that will minimize the probability that the bullet will ricochet. Most municipalities have enacted a law that prevent the use of firearm even on private properties.
Why You Shouldn’t Use Poison
Poisoning the iguanas will not be as effective as using rodenticide on rats. In addition, since it will take days or sometimes weeks of sufferings, poison has been considered illegal in eliminating the wild creatures. When you choose the poison, you really have no complete control on what animal will consume this. Since it will take a couple of days before they die, other animals can eat the poisoned iguana that can expose them to secondary-poisoning.
Most municipality will encourage you to use exclusion method rather than the lethal method. Simply sealing the holes of the iguanas with stones can discourage them to move to other property. There are also wildlife commissions that are offering seminars that will offer the residents with necessary tips to get rid of the unwanted visitor in their premises.
